Identification of Relapsing Fever Spirochaetes

چکیده

Many different opinions are observed if one compares the denomination of the species of relapsing fever spirochaetes by different authors. Brumpt (1) describes 14 different species in his extended Parasitology and Stitts (2) 18, but he admits the possibility of synonyms among them. Napier (3) mentions that the application of names of the countries in which the spirochaetes occur implicates the fact that the diseases are caused by different species in each of these countries but there is no justification for any such assumption. It seems probable that there are 2 species, Spirochaete recurrentis transmitted by lice and Spirochaete duttoni which is the causal organism of the tick transmitted relapsing fever. He regards as synonyms: obervieieri, carteri, berbera, aegyptica, novyi and recurrentis, all transmitted by lice. Moreover, the following tick borne spirochaetes are syno-

Analysis of intra-specific variation in the fatty acid profiles of Borrelia burgdorferi.

Analysis of the fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) of bacteria is a commonly used chemotaxonomic technique. Application of this methodology to spirochaetes associated with Lyme borreliosis revealed distinct clusters corresponding to three genetically distinguished groups: Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto, B. garinii, and the VS461 group. However, B. garinii formed a common group with B. hermsii...

Does RecA have a role in Borrelia recurrentis?

Genomic sequencing of two relapsing fever spirochaetes showed truncation of recA in Borrelia recurrentis, but not in Borrelia duttonii. RecA has an important role among bacteria; we investigated whether this characteristic was representative of B. recurrentis, or an artefact following in vitro cultivation. We sequenced recA directly from samples of patient with louse-borne relapsing fever (B. r...

New concepts for the old challenge of African relapsing fever borreliosis.

Relapsing fever, caused by spirochaetes belonging to the genus Borrelia, was once the cause of worldwide epidemic disease. This was largely through infection with the louse-borne form of the disease, caused by Borrelia recurrentis (louse-borne relapsing fever (LBRF)). During the last century, we have witnessed the demise of this infection, largely owing to improved standards of living and the i...

Comparison of Borrelia isolated from UK foci of Lyme disease.

Restriction endonuclease digestion of linear borrelial chromosomal DNA showed that three isolates of UK Lyme disease spirochaetes differed markedly from each other and from published data for other isolates from North America and continental Europe. Analysis of linear plasmid bands revealed that UK isolates differed from each other in the number and sizes of the plasmids in isolates from differ...

Spirochaetal lipoproteins and pathogenesis.

Anchoring of proteins to membranes by lipid modification is a universal strategy of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. The spirochaetes represent a distinct bacterial phylum that have utilized the lipoprotein design extensively as evidenced by genome-sequencing studies revealing a large number of different paralogous families of lipoprotein genes, encoding 22 potential lipoproteins in Trepo...
